IT'S not only parties that will be thrown in Tiverton this festive season.
The town is also set to host the first ever World Christmas Cracker-Throwing Championships.
Men, women and children are all welcome to take part in the contest organised by "sensible" Sally Raynes and self-confessed "idiot" James Bamber, of Wacky Nation.
Sally said: "Elves and reindeers can even take part, provided they are not busy. It is not as easy as it sounds. As with pulling a cracker, success is more dependent on technique than brawn.
"The right style of throw will definitely gain more distance but it is also about the timing. A mistimed chuck could catch a gust of wind and send the cracker sailing backwards – embarrassing enough to send Rudolph more red-faced than red-nosed.
"Tiverton is very much a town of many nationalities, so what better place to host a world championships.
"We hope to see a really friendly, competitive camaraderie as everyone comes together for a very exciting time."
Sally and James, who are behind a group which has held and competed in backward running and cold water swimming contests, are organising their latest event on behalf of Tiverton Trade Association and the Portas Tiverton Town Team.
"We are thrilled to be organising this new and exciting family friendly event," added Sally.
"It is expected the winning distance could be decided by a matter of centimetres, so everybody should start practising now, but save a few crackers for pulling on Christmas day."
Councillor Sue Griggs, chairwoman of the Tiverton Town Team, said: "This is a great, fun addition to our Tiverton Christmas Festival programme and we hope the people of Tiverton and surrounding area will be enthused to come along and take part.
"And, at the same time, they can experience all of the great shops that Tiverton has to offer."
The event will be held on Saturday, December 14, and more information is available at the website wackynation.com/christmascracker.
