HEALTH bosses are urging Mid Devon partygoers not to risk ending New Year celebrations in hospital.

NHS Devon says drinking too much could spoil tonight's fun by making people more vulnerable to injury or illness.

Ambulances and hospital emergency departments are already under great pressure and this is exacerbated when people are admitted to emergency departments with alcohol-related conditions.

Devon GP Dr Peter Rudge said: "In the short term, drinking too much causes people to lose their inhibitions so they may put themselves in dangerous situations.

"In the long term, regularly drinking more than the recommended amount can increase people's chances of types of cancer, memory loss, brain damage, types of stroke and heart and liver disease.

"So our simple message to people is to have fun, but to think before they drink too much."

Excellent advice. If only people didn't follow like sheep when trying to outdo their mates on who can drink the most and supposedly have the best time.
