JUDGES in the Britain in Bloom competition have awarded Tiverton a silver gilt award once again in recognition of the town's gardening efforts.

There was extra delight for members of the town's In Bloom committee who travelled to Weston Super Mare last Thursday (September 20) when they learnt they had also been granted a prize for the best portfolio submitted with an entry.

Assistant town clerk Jill Larcombe said the committee were pleased to have maintained the silver gilt status in the first year since the departure of In Bloom stalwart and former Mayor Wally Burke.

She said the committee was now looking to build on this success by "getting more people involved" in the competition, particularly through the 'Its Your Neighbourhood' scheme which aims to widen the traditional appeal of the competition.

Jill said: "Last year the portfolio prize went to Plymouth, so this year for Tiverton's portfolio to stand out alongside all the others in the South West was a great achievement."

Judges told the council they enjoyed their Tiverton visit.
