A WELL-USED footpath linking Tiverton town centre to Belmont Road will be temporarily closed while building work takes place on the town's former workhouse.

The path that runs from Water Lane to Belmont Road, through the grounds of the old hospital and workhouse, will be closed for two weeks later this month.

Property developers Devonshire Homes says further minimal disruption will be necessary at times over the next 12 months.

The path is not a public footpath but has been adopted by children attending the nearby Castle Primary School.

The path will be closed for a fortnight from Monday, October 15.

Steve Russell, land and planning director for Devonshire Homes, said disruption would be kept to a minimum.

"Due to safety reasons it will be necessary to close the footpath; we are aware of the usage and felt it was appropriate to advise the general public in advance," he said.

The first phase of the redevelopment of the site should provide 30 new homes by the end of 2014.
