A VAN driver has denied causing the death of a delivery man who was killed as he prepared to unload a timber lorry.
Phillip White, aged 51, of Barle Court, Tiverton, pleaded not guilty to causing death by careless driving when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.
Judge Francis Gilbert, QC, Recorder of Exeter, adjourned the case for a trial later this year.
White, who was the driver of a silver Renault Trafic van, denies causing the death of 61-year-old Nigel Gutteridge, who suffered fatal injuries in the accident last April.
White was granted bail to await trial in front of a jury at Exeter Crown Court.
The victim lived in Thelbridge Cross, near Witheridge, and worked for the local firm Pennymoor Timber as a part time driver.
He is thought to have driven to Tiverton to deliver a cargo of wood and got out of the cab of his red Daf lorry when the accident happened close to the Tesco Express shop in Lea Road at about 7.30am.
Mr Gutteridge was a semi retired former director of a tool hire firm and vintage car buff.
